Ant-Man LEGO Review

Hello everyone,

LEGO just released a brand new set in their ongoing Marvel Super Heroes line that coincides with the brand new movie, Ant-Man. At the time of writing this is the only Ant-Man LEGO set available, and there is no suggestion of any more to come. The set is called Ant-Man Final Battle, and is set number 76039.

Of course, we just had to buy it, and earlier today I put it together. I took photos of the construction process, and the finished product, as well as close ups of the mini-figures. This set contains 183 pieces, including the three mini-figures. The figures included are Ant-Man, Hank Pym as the former Ant-Man, and Yellow Jacket.

Let's take a look inside, starting with the front and back of the box:

The contents of the box:

The set was split into two construction stages, with two bags dividing the different parts of the set. I was here after bag one:

And this is the finished product, after bag two:

Here are the mini-figures:

I could be wrong, but I would anticipate that this will probably the only set that LEGO are planning to make from the new movie. The reason I speculate this is that for some reason, they chose to include Hank Pym in his Ant-Man costume. In the movie (which you can read my own detailed review of, here) Pym only appears as his former heroic self in a brief flashback, and not in the main continuity alongside Scott or Yellow Jacket. I think that LEGO probably wanted a way of including another character from the movie in the Marvel line, but without designing another set, and so they just decided to throw him in this one anyway. Of course, I could be wrong, but that's what I think.

The ant itself is pretty cool, with its wings and movable body parts, and the figures have a space on top to be able to sit or stand. Yellow Jacket's extendable arms move around, and the little yellow light things on the ends can actually be fired (with some force, I might add) by pressing down on a small clip on the top of the arms. One of the funniest things about this set is that LEGO did a product placement of themselves, by including the small and giant versions of the LEGO brick! The giant version of the brick also included screws, which can be fired by pressing down on the yellow brick. Take a look below at Hank Pym as a "normal" sized human, and then shrunk against the LEGO bricks that he's standing next to.

Neat huh? They also included two smaller ants, which are "cute", and also a black ball/mini-figure head, which honestly, I have no idea what the purpose of it is! The instructions gave no indication, except picturing it next to Scott, and I can't figure out where it's meant to go! Odd.
You'll also notice that Scott is standing on a clear platform. This has a slight spring action that allows the character to "jump" when depressed, and then released.

Finally, this set comes with a small comic book that features a short strip of LEGO Ant-Man and LEGO Spider-Man. A nice freebie to get in the box.

I would give this set four out of five. It isn't a bad set at all, and it has some cool features such as the inclusion of Pym as Ant-Man, and the giant LEGO bricks. The reason it doesn't quite make five stars is that it just doesn't really excite me that much. It's a good set, but that's about as far as my enthusiasm for it goes. Eventually I would probably include the mini-figures on some other scene that I'd want to create, and recycle the rest of the set for parts.
