Star Trek Mega Bloks Review - Part One

Hello everyone,

Recently Mega Bloks announced that they were going to be working with Viacom to produce a new range of collectable Star Trek sets in time for the 50th anniversary of the show later this year. Despite the Mega Bloks blog and website saying that these would not be released until later in the year (nearer the time of the anniversary date), this week I happened to notice that two of the new sets had already appeared on Amazon.com!

Let's start with the Transporter Room.

The Transporter Room set contains 321 pieces, including three minifigures. It is set number DPH81, and can be purchased on Amazon.com, here.

The really neat thing about this set is that it actually can be used to represent both the main canonical Star Trek universe, or the mirror universe, as seen in the Original Series ("Mirror, Mirror"), and again in Enterprise ("In a Mirror, Darkly"). The transporter pad background can be switched out with relative ease, and the figures are from the mirror universe. If you want the regular figures you would have to buy the other sets coming later this year, but the cool thing then is that you end with a transporter room and two variations of the figures!

The "regular" universe transporter room (the backdrops are different):

I really love this set, and give it five out of five. I love that they really did their research and decided to go with something that fans really would know and love. The Original Series "Mirror, Mirror" episode is a fan favourite, and Mega Bloks were really smart here to give you the option to flip the pieces to have both versions. To include the mirror universe figures in this set but still make the other ones available in future sets is almost genius.

I like that the room opens up for easier access. The control panel swivels around, and the figures come with additional stands so that you can display them separately if desired.

The second set that is currently available is the Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser. The set contains 351 pieces, including one minifigure. It is set number DPH80, and can be purchased on Amazon.com, here.

I would like to give this set five out of five, but for reasons that I'll explain, it is going to get a four, unfortunately. While I think the ship looks really cool, and it's great to have Kor (the Klingon character included here), my set was missing one of the clear standing poles that hold the ship up! We contacted Amazon, and a replacement is arriving tomorrow, but nonetheless, it is a knock to the quality control and is disappointing since these are supposed to be collector sets. The second reason is that unlike LEGO, Mega Bloks do not number the bags when you build the sets, and when you have a set like this that is practically all one colour, it takes exponentially longer to construct, and can be a little confusing when trying to find the correct pieces.

With that said, I do love the ship, and Kor looks great. The Klingon flag, Kor's blaster and the title plaque are added details that make this set a really good collector item.

My over all impression of this new range so far is that I am really impressed. I am very much looking forward to the Enterprise scale model and the Enterprise Bridge sets, which come out later in the year. When they do, you can be sure to find part two of this review, here on the blog!

Have a great day everyone,

Dan.
